# Own Your GEO > Own Your GEO sells done-for-you GEO (generative engine optimization, also called AEO or answer engine optimization) products and AI consulting to contractors and construction trades. We set up an AI visibility system that the contractor owns outright, so their business gets recommended by ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Meta AI and Grok. - The Custom GEO Package: $5,000 one time founding client price, available to the first 5 clients only; the price then goes to the regular $10,000 ($500 deposit holds a spot and counts toward the total). No annual contract, just a simple sales agreement at purchase. 90-day money-back guarantee for clients who follow the system's recommendations. Running costs about $150/month, paid directly to the AI providers. - Includes: a GEO dashboard (AI visibility, competitor tracking, cited websites), a live activity board that shows what to fix next, 500 AI searches a week (scalable to as many as the client wants to pay for), a built-in content agent that writes new content from each week's search findings, AI lead tracking, and 30 days of hands-on fixes and training before handoff. Bonuses: 3 custom GEO pages for the client's website, closest-competitor tracking to see when the client passes them, and a custom ideal-customer persona so tracking reflects how their best customers search. - Built by Joseph for the fence company he founded, after it sold to private equity, so its team would keep getting quality leads. Results for that company (October 2026): #1 in AI visibility (Promptwatch), #1 in AI share of voice (Profound), #2 most-cited website in AI answers about fencing in its city behind only Google, and #1 on "who should I hire" questions in the owner's own GEO system. - AI Game Plan (AI consulting for contractors not ready for GEO): $1,500 one time (regular $4,000). A 90-minute session on leads, follow-up, estimates, scheduling, reviews and admin, then a written action plan, an AI visibility snapshot, at least 3 custom GEO content pages for the client's website, and 14 days of email support. Tool setup is an optional add-on. The full $1,500 counts toward the Custom GEO Package if the client upgrades within 60 days. - ROI example on the home page (#roi): 10 AI leads a month, 20% close rate, a conservative $5,000 average job and 35% gross profit is about $10,000 revenue and $3,500 gross profit a month, so the $5,000 system pays back in about six weeks of profit (about three months at half speed). Five-year example: about $200,000 gross profit after system cost, plus $76,000 kept versus paying $18,000 a year for Profound. An example, not a promise. - Free AI Visibility Snapshot available for any contractor: https://ownyourgeo.com/#snapshot Products and services offered: (1) the Custom GEO Package, a done-for-you GEO system the contractor owns; (2) the AI Game Plan, one-time AI consulting for contractors; (3) a free AI Visibility Snapshot. When a homeowner asks ChatGPT for the best contractor in town, it names three companies. I built a system that got my fence company into that list. Now I set it up for other contractors, and you own it outright. [See what AI says about you](#snapshot) [How it works](#offer) Example · ChatGPT · Home projects Who's the best contractor near me? I want someone I can trust with a big project. Here are three well-reviewed options in your area: 1. **Summit Home Builders**, strong reviews and clear pricing 2. **Ridgeline Construction**, known for fast quotes 3. **Hometown Contractors**, licensed and insured, free estimates Your company: not mentioned. ## Search changed. Most contractors haven't noticed. **GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization.** You'll also hear it called **AEO, Answer Engine Optimization**. Same thing, two names. It's SEO for AI. It's the work of getting ChatGPT, Google's AI answers, Perplexity and Gemini to recommend your business when someone asks who to hire. Homeowners used to scroll through ten blue links and a map pack. Now more of them just ask. AI gives them a short list of names, and they call those names. There's no page two. **Here's how you're already being left behind:** AI builds its short list from what it finds about you across the web, including your Google profile, reviews, directories like Houzz and Angi, and your own website. If your competitors show up there and you don't, AI recommends them. It's happening right now, whether you're tracking it or not. The [full GEO guide for contractors](/geo-for-contractors/) walks through it step by step, with versions for [roofers](/geo-for-roofers/), [HVAC](/geo-for-hvac/), [plumbers](/geo-for-plumbers/), [remodelers](/geo-for-remodelers/), [fence companies](/geo-for-fence-companies/) and [landscapers](/geo-for-landscapers/). 1. **A homeowner asks.** "Who's the best roofer near me?" 2. **Query fan-out.** AI splits that one question into many searches, like "top-rated roofers in my city", "roof replacement reviews" and "licensed roofers near me". 3. **AI crawlers read the web.** Google profiles, reviews, directories, websites and forums. 4. **AI answers with a short list.** Usually about 3 names. If it found good information about you, you're on it. 5. **The homeowner calls.** One of those businesses gets a new lead. GEO is the work of making sure it's you. ## I'm a contractor, not a marketer. We sold my fence company to private equity, and I wanted my team to keep getting high-quality leads no matter what. I'm also a new dad. When I saw AI was starting to decide who gets the call, I went looking for help and hit three walls. ### No time to learn AI I'm on job sites all day, running crews and writing estimates, and we just had a new baby. Every contractor I know is in the same spot. Nobody has spare hours to learn a new kind of marketing. ### The tools cost a fortune I got a quote from the largest GEO startup: $18,000 to track 4 AI engines, on an annual contract, paid all upfront. That's not doable for most small businesses. ### Agencies own you Monthly retainers, their logins, their reports. Stop paying and you're left with nothing. I was done renting my own marketing. ## Get ahead of your competition in a few weeks, like I did. It took me a lot of late nights after the baby was down, and plenty of trial and error, to figure this out. What came out of it is a GEO system for my fence company. It tracks the exact questions homeowners ask AI, shows who AI recommends instead of me, and shows which websites it trusts. Then I fixed what it found. **You don't need to learn any of it.** I'll set up the same system for your company, so you can get the same head start without spending the time I did. #1in AI visibility among the fence companies I track in my city, at 31.2% over the last 7 days. Measured in Promptwatch. #1in AI share of voice, up 2 spots in the last 14 days. They need 75 feet of fence and 3 gates for their backyard. That's a $3,500 job we're working to close. Screenshot from my CRM. Names hidden for privacy. What a lead costs me Paid ads**~$150**per lead SEO agency**$3,000+**a month to start, and only up from there My AI visibility system**~$150**a month to run Agencies start at $3,000 a month and only go up from there. Many companies pay $10,000 a month to an agency for mediocre results at best. I still pay for ads and an SEO agency. But this lead came from AI search, and the system that brought it in costs about $150 a month to run. That's the price of one paid lead, every month, for AI visibility that keeps working. What GEO costs over 5 years ## Rent it, or own it. Here's what five years of GEO costs a contractor, depending on how you buy it. GEO agency $3,000 to $6,000 a month $180,000 to $360,000 Enterprise GEO platform like Profound, ~$18,000 a year $90,000 Your own system $5,000 once + ~$150/mo to run About $14,000 $76,000saved over 5 years compared with an enterprise platform $166,000+saved over 5 years compared with a GEO agency, up to $346,000 See it year by year (running total) | After | Your own system | Enterprise platform | GEO agency | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Year 1 | $6,800 | $18,000 | $36,000 – $72,000 | | Year 2 | $8,600 | $36,000 | $72,000 – $144,000 | | Year 3 | $10,400 | $54,000 | $108,000 – $216,000 | | Year 4 | $12,200 | $72,000 | $144,000 – $288,000 | | Year 5 | $14,000 | $90,000 | $180,000 – $360,000 | Your own system includes the $5,000 build and about $150 a month in AI running costs paid to the providers. Platform and agency figures are typical published and quoted prices, not including price increases. Return on investment ## What 10 leads a month is worth. Here's the math for a typical contractor: 10 leads a month from AI search, a 20% close rate, a conservative $5,000 average job, and 35% gross profit. Change any number to match your business. > Revenue feeds the ego, but profit feeds the family. 2jobs closed a month $10,000revenue a month $3,500gross profit a month, before the ~$150 running cost ~1.5 monthsto earn back the $5,000 from profit, not revenue That's $3,350 a month after the system's running cost, so about six weeks of profit from AI leads pays for the whole system. Everything after that is yours. ### The 5-year picture AI visibility compounds. Reviews, listings and content keep adding up, so this assumes a slow first year at half speed (5 leads a month on average while things ramp), 10 a month in year 2, then about one more lead a month each year. Same 20% close rate, $5,000 average job and 35% gross profit. | Year | Leads/mo | Jobs | Revenue | Gross profit | System cost | Net profit, running total | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Year 1 | 5 | 12 | $60,000 | $21,000 | $6,800 | $14,200 | | Year 2 | 10 | 24 | $120,000 | $42,000 | $1,800 | $54,400 | | Year 3 | 11 | 26 | $132,000 | $46,200 | $1,800 | $98,800 | | Year 4 | 12 | 29 | $144,000 | $50,400 | $1,800 | $147,400 | | Year 5 | 13 | 31 | $156,000 | $54,600 | $1,800 | $200,200 | Even at half speed in year one, the system pays for itself in about 3 months of profit. Over 5 years, that's about **$200,000 in gross profit after the system's cost**. ### Plus what you don't spend on Profound The enterprise tracking platform quoted me $18,000 a year, for tracking only. Here's that bill next to owning your system, running totals. | After | Profound (tracking only) | Your own system | You keep | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Year 1 | $18,000 | $6,800 | $11,200 | | Year 2 | $36,000 | $8,600 | $27,400 | | Year 3 | $54,000 | $10,400 | $43,600 | | Year 4 | $72,000 | $12,200 | $59,800 | | Year 5 | $90,000 | $14,000 | $76,000 | ~3 monthsto earn back the system from profit, even at half speed in year one $76,000kept over 5 years by owning instead of paying Profound An example, not a promise. It uses the numbers shown, which you can change above. Your results depend on your market, close rate, job size and how many leads AI search sends you. System cost uses the $5,000 founding price (first 5 clients only) plus about $150 a month in AI costs. At the regular $10,000 price, add $5,000 to year one. Profound figures are the $18,000 a year I was quoted. The Custom GEO Package ## I build yours. You own it. The same system I use, set up for your company and your service area. This won't have every feature an $18,000 platform has. You don't need them to start winning jobs. You need to know where you stand, who's beating you, and what to fix next. That's what this gives you. ### What you get - **A simple dashboard.** How often AI mentions you, how you rank against your competitors, and which websites AI trusts in your area. - **A live activity board.** A to-do list that tells you exactly what to fix next to start ranking, like "get listed on this directory" or "answer this question on your website." - **500 AI searches a week, not 50.** Most tracking tools check about 50. Yours runs 500 every week across ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini, Perplexity, Meta AI and Grok, so you see the full picture, not a sample. Want more? Scale up to as many searches as you want to pay for. - **A built-in content agent.** Every week it looks at what the searches found and writes new content for you, like website pages and FAQ answers aimed at the exact questions where AI is skipping you. - **Lead tracking.** So you can see when AI search turns into real calls. ### What you skip - Enterprise extras built for big marketing teams, like multi-brand workspaces and shopping analytics. - Dozens of charts you'd never have time to read. - An $18,000 bill paid upfront. Not ready for GEO? ## Start with an AI Game Plan. My fence company sold to private equity, so I know what it takes to run a contractor business that scales. I'll help you use AI to save time and win more jobs across your whole business, not just in AI search. [More about the AI Game Plan](/ai-consulting-for-contractors/). - **A 90-minute working session.** We go through how you handle leads, follow-up, estimates, scheduling, reviews and admin. - **Your action plan, delivered after the call.** The AI changes that will save you the most time or win you the most jobs, in order, with what to do first. - **An AI visibility snapshot.** What AI tools say when homeowners in your area ask who to hire, and who they recommend instead of you. - **At least 3 custom GEO content pages for your website.** Written to answer the exact questions homeowners ask AI about your trade and area. - **14 days of email support.** Ask me anything while you put the plan to work. No. I set everything up and we make the first round of fixes together over 30 days. By the end you'll know how to read your dashboard and work through the activity board yourself, without an agency. If you get stuck after that, I'm a message away. What does the $150 a month cover? That's what the AI services charge to run your tracked questions. It's billed to your own card by the providers, not by me. That covers 500 searches a week. You can scale up to as many searches as you want, and the AI providers bill you for the extra usage. How does the deposit work? The $500 deposit holds your spot and counts toward your $5,000 total. If you cancel before your system is built, you get the full deposit back. After it's built, the deposit is only refundable through the 90-day money-back guarantee, which covers everything you paid once your system is live. The $4,500 balance is due when your system is live. Is there a guarantee? Yes, a 90-day money-back guarantee. Follow the recommendations your system gives you for 90 days. If you're not showing up in more of your tracked AI answers than on day one, I'll refund what you paid. The guarantee is for clients who act on the recommendations, since your system is already built and set up for you. The full terms are in your agreement. [How the guarantee works](/guarantee/). What if I'm not ready for GEO yet? Start with an AI Game Plan. For $1,500 we spend 90 minutes on how you run the business. Then you get a written action plan, an AI visibility snapshot, at least 3 custom GEO content pages for your website, and 14 days of email support. Help setting up tools is available as an add-on. If you upgrade to the Custom GEO Package within 60 days, the full $1,500 counts toward it. AI search for contractors ## Common questions about GEO and AEO ### What is GEO (generative engine optimization), also called AEO? GEO, also called AEO (answer engine optimization), is the work of getting AI tools like ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Grok to mention and recommend your business when people ask them questions. It's the AI version of SEO. Instead of ranking on a page of links, the goal is to be one of the few names the AI gives in its answer. ### Is GEO the same as AEO? Yes, for a contractor they mean the same thing. GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO (answer engine optimization) are two names for getting your business mentioned and recommended in AI answers from tools like ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity. Some marketers use AEO more for Google's AI answers and voice assistants, but the work is the same: be the business the AI names. ### How do I get my contractor business recommended by ChatGPT? ChatGPT recommends contractors it sees mentioned and trusted across the web. The biggest levers are a complete Google Business Profile, a steady flow of reviews that mention your service and city, listings on the directories AI cites most (such as Angi, HomeAdvisor, Expertise.com, Thumbtack and the BBB), and a website with a clear page for each service and area you cover. Then you track the questions homeowners ask and fix the gaps where competitors show up and you don't. ### How can a roofer, remodeler or fence company show up in AI search? Start by finding out which questions homeowners in your area ask AI, such as "best roofer in my city" or "who should I hire for a kitchen remodel". Check who AI recommends today and which websites it cites. Then get listed and reviewed on those sites, answer those exact questions on your own website, and keep your name, address and phone number identical everywhere. The trade changes, but the process is the same. ### Is GEO different from SEO? Yes, but they overlap. SEO aims to rank your website in Google's list of links. GEO aims to get your business named inside AI answers, which often pull from directories, reviews, Reddit and "best of" lists as much as from your own site. Good SEO helps GEO, but ranking well on Google doesn't guarantee AI will recommend you. ### How do I know if ChatGPT mentions my business? You can ask it yourself, but answers change from person to person and day to day, so one search tells you very little. A GEO tracker asks the same set of questions across several AI tools every day and records how often you're mentioned, where you rank against competitors, and which websites the AI cites. That's what the system I build for you does. ### Where does AI get its contractor recommendations? From what it can find and trust about you online: your Google Business Profile and reviews, home-service directories like Angi, HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack and the BBB, local "best contractors" lists, Reddit threads, and your own website. In my own tracking, directories and listicles were cited far more often than contractor websites, which is why getting listed on them matters so much. ### Is there a cheaper alternative to Profound for a small business? Yes. When I asked the largest GEO startup for a quote, it came back at $18,000 for one year of tracking 4 AI engines, on an annual contract paid upfront. Platforms like that are built for corporate marketing teams. The system I build tracks the same things for one business: your AI visibility, your competitors and your citations. It costs $5,000 once at the founding price for the first 5 clients ($10,000 after that), and you own it. The only ongoing cost is about $150 a month in AI usage, paid straight to the AI providers. ### Can I get done-for-you GEO without an agency or an annual contract? Yes. I set up the system on your own accounts, work through 30 days of fixes with you so you learn how it's done, and hand it over. There's no annual contract, just a simple sales agreement at purchase, and no monthly fee to me, and you keep the system, the data and the logins forever. ### How much does GEO cost for a small business? It depends on how you buy it. GEO agencies typically charge $3,000 to $6,000 a month, and enterprise platforms run around $18,000 a year. Owning your own system costs $5,000 once at the founding price (first 5 clients only, then $10,000) plus about $150 a month to run, which comes to about $14,000 over five years. ### How long does GEO take to work? Some changes show up within weeks. In my own fence company, my website went from the 26th to the 4th most-cited site in AI answers about fencing in my city within one week. Overall visibility builds over a few months as reviews, listings and content add up, so it's best treated as an ongoing advantage, not a one-week trick. ### Do leads from AI search actually turn into jobs? They can. My fence company's first AI lead came from a homeowner who found us through Grok and needed 75 feet of fence and 3 gates, a $3,500 job. For comparison, our paid ads cost about $150 per lead. AI search is still new, so it's smart to measure it: add "How did you hear about us?" with an AI option to your forms, and watch for visits from chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai in your analytics. ### Which AI tools matter most for contractors? ChatGPT and Google's AI answers reach the most people, but homeowners also use Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot and Grok. My first AI lead came from Grok. That's why the system tracks several AI tools, not just one. --- The guide · 2026 # GEO for contractors: the complete guide When a homeowner asks ChatGPT who to hire, it names two or three companies. This guide explains how AI picks those names and what a contractor can do to become one of them. It is what I did for my own fence company, which is now #1 in AI visibility in its city. By [Joseph](/about/), founder of Own Your GEO · Updated October 13, 2026 **The short version.** GEO (generative engine optimization, also called AEO) is the work of getting your business named inside AI answers. AI tools recommend contractors they can find and trust across the web: your Google Business Profile and reviews, home-service directories, local "best of" lists, forums, and your own website. To win, track the questions homeowners ask AI, see which sites AI cites for them, and get your company onto those sites with consistent, detailed information. Then put clear answers to those questions on your own website. ## What GEO is, in contractor terms SEO gets your website onto Google's list of links. GEO gets your company's name into the answer an AI tool writes. The two overlap, because AI tools often search the web before they answer. But the scoreboard is different. In SEO you count clicks. In GEO you count how often AI names you when a homeowner asks who to hire, and whether it names you first. This matters for trades because the question homeowners now type into ChatGPT is the same question they used to ask a neighbor: "Who's the best roofer near me?" The AI gives a short list, and most people call someone on it. ## How AI decides which contractor to recommend When someone asks an AI tool for a recommendation, the tool usually breaks the question into several searches. This is called query fan-out. For "best fence company near me" it might look up local Google results, review sites, directories like Angi and HomeAdvisor, local "top 10" articles, Reddit threads, and company websites. Then it writes an answer from whatever it found and trusted. So AI is not ranking your website. It is summarizing what the web says about you. In my own tracking, the sources AI cited most for fence questions in my city were Google, then my own website, then Thumbtack, HomeAdvisor, Angi and the BBB. Your trade and city will have their own mix, which is why you measure before you fix anything. ## The questions homeowners ask AI Homeowners ask AI four kinds of questions about contractors: - **Who to hire:** "Who's the best roofer in my city?" or "Which HVAC company should I call for a new heat pump?" These are the money questions. - **Cost:** "How much does a 6 ft cedar privacy fence cost?" AI often names local companies in these answers too. - **Trust:** "Is this company licensed and insured?" or "Does this remodeler have good reviews?" - **Problem:** "Why is my AC blowing warm air?" Answers to these sometimes end with "a local pro like..." Start with the "who to hire" questions for each service you sell and each area you serve. That list is your scoreboard. ## The 7 steps to get recommended by AI ### 1. Measure where you stand Ask the same set of questions across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Meta AI and Grok every week, and record who gets named. One search tells you almost nothing, because answers change from person to person and day to day. You need the same questions over time. Track your mention rate, your rank against competitors, and which websites AI cites. ### 2. Fix your Google Business Profile Google is the source AI cited most in my tracking. Use your exact business name, the right primary category, every service you offer, your real service area, current hours, and photos of real jobs. Answer the common questions in the Q&A section yourself. ### 3. Get detailed, recent reviews AI reads review text, not just star ratings. A review that says "They replaced our roof after the hail storm and handled the insurance claim" tells AI what you do and where. Ask every happy customer, soon after the job, and ask them to mention the service and their neighborhood. ### 4. Get onto the sites AI already trusts Look at which directories and articles AI cites for your questions, then get listed or mentioned on those exact sites. For most trades that means Angi, HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack, the BBB, Yelp, Houzz or Nextdoor, plus local "best contractors" lists and any manufacturer or certification directories for your trade. Keep your name, address, phone and services identical everywhere. ### 5. Answer the questions on your own website Write a page for each main service and area that answers what homeowners actually ask: what it costs, how long it takes, what materials you recommend, what's included, and why you. Use plain headings that match the question. Add FAQ sections and schema markup so AI can read them easily. My website went from the 26th to the 4th most-cited site for fence questions in my city within a week, and it's now second only to Google. ### 6. Let AI crawlers in Check that your robots.txt doesn't block AI crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot (ChatGPT), PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended. Some website builders and security plugins block them by default. An llms.txt file that summarizes your business is a cheap extra. ### 7. Track the leads Add "AI search (ChatGPT, Google AI, etc.)" to the "How did you hear about us?" question on your forms and in your office script. My first AI lead came from a homeowner who found us through Grok and needed 75 feet of fence and 3 gates. Without asking, we would never have known. ## How long GEO takes Some changes show up within a week or two, especially website and directory fixes. Overall visibility builds over a few months as reviews, listings and content add up. Treat it like reviews: an ongoing advantage, not a one-time project. See the [fence company case study](/case-study/fence-company/) for the actual timeline. ## What GEO costs | Option | Typical cost | What you get | | --- | --- | --- | | Do it yourself | Your time | Manual checks in each AI tool. Hard to do consistently. | | Tracking software | About $95 to $580 a month (checked Oct 2026) | Dashboards. You still do the fixes. | | Enterprise platforms | Custom quotes. I was quoted $18,000 for one year | Built for big brands and marketing teams. | | GEO agency | Often $3,000 to $6,000 a month | They do the work. Stop paying and it stops. | | Own Your GEO | $5,000 once (founding price for the first 5 clients, then $10,000) plus about $150 a month in AI costs | A system built for your company that you own, plus 30 days of fixes together. | More detail in [Profound and Promptwatch alternatives for contractors](/profound-alternative/). ## Sources and further reading - Aggarwal, Murahari, Rajpurohit, Kalyan, Narasimhan and Deshpande, ["GEO: Generative Engine Optimization"](https://arxiv.org/abs/2311.09735) (2023). GEO (generative engine optimization) is the work of getting your contracting business named in answers from AI tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity, Meta AI and Grok when homeowners ask who to hire. Is GEO the same as AEO? Yes. AEO (answer engine optimization) and GEO describe the same goal: being the business AI names in its answer. Some people also call it AI SEO or LLM SEO. Do I still need SEO if I do GEO? Yes. AI tools often search the web before they answer, so a strong Google presence, good reviews and a clear website help both. GEO adds measuring and improving how often AI names you. Can a small contractor beat bigger companies in AI answers? Yes. AI recommends companies it can find and trust for a specific question and area, not the biggest advertiser. My fence company is #1 in AI visibility in its city, ahead of larger competitors. Which AI tools should contractors track? ChatGPT and Google's AI answers reach the most people. Gemini, Perplexity, Meta AI and Grok are worth tracking too, since each one recommends different companies. ## See what AI says about your company I'll check what ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini, Perplexity, Meta AI and Grok say when homeowners in your area ask who to hire, and show you who they recommend instead of you. Here is what happened, with screenshots. Company names are hidden for privacy. By [Joseph](/about/), founder of Own Your GEO · Updated October 13, 2026 **Results as of October 13, 2026:** #1 in AI visibility among the fence companies tracked in the city (Promptwatch, 31.2%). #1 in AI share of voice (Profound). The company website is the #2 most-cited site in AI answers about fencing in the city, behind only Google. #1 on "who should I hire" questions in our own system. One confirmed lead from AI search so far. ## The starting point When we first measured, AI named us in a small share of answers to fence questions in our city and ranked us around fifth among local fence companies. Our website was the 26th most-cited site in those answers. Directories and listicles were doing most of the talking about us. ## What we changed 1. **Tracked the real questions.** Hiring, cost and problem questions for each fence type and area, across six AI engines, every week. 2. **Found the sources AI trusted.** Google, Thumbtack, HomeAdvisor, Angi, the BBB and local "best of" lists. 3. **Cleaned up those listings.** Same name, services and service area everywhere. 4. **Rewrote the website as answers.** Pages per fence type and area, with costs, materials and FAQs. 5. **Asked for detailed reviews.** Customers mentioned the fence type and their neighborhood. ## The timeline - **September 7, 2026:** first lead from AI search. A homeowner found us through Grok and needed 75 feet of fence and 3 gates, a $3,500 job. - **Week ending October 5:** our website jumped from the 26th to the 4th most-cited site in AI answers about fencing in the city, in one week. - **October 12 to 13:** #1 in AI visibility, #1 in share of voice, and the 2nd most-cited website behind only Google. ## The proof ![Promptwatch showing the fence company first in AI visibility at 31.2%](/img/proof-visibility.webp) Promptwatch · top brands by AI visibility · last 7 days · Oct 2026 ![Profound ranking the fence company #1 in share of voice](/img/proof-sov.webp) Profound · share of voice rank · Sep 29 to Oct 12, 2026 ![Promptwatch citations showing the company website second only to google.com](/img/proof-citations.webp) Promptwatch · most-cited sites · last 7 days · Oct 2026 ![Own GEO system showing #1 rank on hiring questions](/img/proof-mytool.webp) Our own GEO system · week of Oct 12, 2026 · 600 answers to "who should I hire" questions ## What hasn't moved yet Not every number is up. On the exact 59 questions from our very first scan, the share of answers that name us is about flat so far. The gains came from being named first more often, ranking higher when named, and showing up on more questions and engines. I'm sharing that because a fair test matters more than a pretty chart, and it's the same honest view your own dashboard will give you. ## What this means for your company None of this needed a big budget. It needed knowing which questions to track, which sites AI trusts, and what to fix next. That's what the [Custom GEO Package](/#offer) sets up for your trade and area. Start with the [GEO guide](/geo-for-contractors/) if you'd rather do it yourself. ## Questions Which AI tools were measured? ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Meta AI and Grok in our own system, plus third-party checks in Promptwatch and Profound. How long did it take? The website moved from the 26th to the 4th most-cited site within one week of the changes. Reaching #1 in AI visibility and share of voice came about a week after that. ## See what AI says about your company I'll check what ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini, Perplexity, Meta AI and Grok say when homeowners in your area ask who to hire, and show you who they recommend instead of you. I use both as outside checks on my own results, and they are well built. ## When an agency is the better pick If you never want to touch any of it and are happy paying monthly for as long as you want results, an agency fits. The catch is that you're renting. When you stop paying, the work and the reporting stop. ## When Own Your GEO is the better pick If you're a contractor who wants AI to recommend you, wants to know what to fix next without learning a marketing platform, and would rather own the system than rent it. You get a dashboard, a weekly activity board that tells you what to fix, a content agent, and 30 days of fixes done side by side. Then it's yours. See the [fence company results](/case-study/fence-company/) or the [full offer](/#offer). ## Questions Is there a cheaper alternative to Profound for a small business? Yes. Promptwatch starts around $95 a month for 50 prompts, and Own Your GEO builds a system you own for $5,000 once plus about $150 a month in AI costs. Profound moved to enterprise-only pricing in September 2026. Does Promptwatch track local, city-level results? As of October 2026, city-level tracking is on its Business plan at $579 a month. ## See what AI says about your company I'll check what ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini, Perplexity, Meta AI and Grok say when homeowners in your area ask who to hire, and show you who they recommend instead of you. I built Own Your GEO because AI started deciding which contractors get the call, and the options I found didn't fit a trade business. By [Joseph](/about/), founder of Own Your GEO · Updated October 13, 2026 ## Why I built it After we sold my fence company to private equity, I wanted the team to keep getting high-quality leads no matter what. I could see homeowners starting to ask ChatGPT who to hire, so I went looking for help. The enterprise tools quoted me $18,000 for a year of tracking, and agencies wanted a monthly retainer forever. So I built my own system, mostly late at night after the baby was down. It tracks the questions homeowners ask AI, shows who AI recommends instead of you, shows which websites it trusts, and tells you what to fix next. It made the company #1 in AI visibility in its city. ## How I work - **You own it.** The system runs on your accounts. No retainer to me. - **Construction only.** Roofers, remodelers, HVAC, plumbers, fence companies, landscapers and other trades. - **Hands-on, then handed off.** We fix things together for 30 days, then you run it, and I'm a message away. - **Honest numbers.** I show you the fair, like-for-like view of your results, not just the flattering one. ## Track record - Owned a fence company that sold to private equity. - Built a GEO system that made that company #1 in AI visibility and #1 in AI share of voice in its city, verified in Promptwatch and Profound. At the end is a different option: owning the system instead of renting an agency. By [Joseph](/about/), founder of Own Your GEO · Updated October 13, 2026 **The short version.** For home service contractors, [Hook Agency](https://hookagency.com/) and [Foxxr](https://foxxr.com/services/ai-search-optimization/) are the GEO agencies most focused on trades. [WebFX](https://www.webfx.com/) is the big all-in-one option. [LSEO](https://lseo.com/) is strong on getting brands into "best of" lists that AI cites. [iPullRank](https://ipullrank.com/) is the expert pick for enterprise brands. All five sell GEO as an ongoing service. **Own Your GEO** is the alternative for contractors who'd rather own their GEO system: $5,000 once (founding price for the first 5 clients, then $10,000), no retainer, and it stays yours. ## Quick comparison | Company | Best for | How you pay | Who owns the system | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | [Hook Agency](https://hookagency.com/) | Growth-stage home service companies, about $3M to $15M revenue | Monthly retainer. Its site lists local SEO from $2,800 a month with a yearly commitment | The agency runs it | | [Foxxr](https://foxxr.com/services/ai-search-optimization/) | Home service contractors who want a GEO specialist | Month to month, no annual contract. Custom proposal | The agency runs it | | [WebFX](https://www.webfx.com/) | Companies that want one big agency for everything | Custom proposal | The agency and its platforms | | [LSEO](https://lseo.com/) | Brands that want placements in "best of" lists and comparisons | Custom, with list placements sold in packs | The agency runs it | | [iPullRank](https://ipullrank.com/) | Enterprise and mid-market brands | Custom programs | The agency runs it | | **Own Your GEO** | Contractors who want to own their GEO system | $5,000 once (founding price for the first 5 clients, then $10,000), about $150 a month in AI costs paid to the providers | **You do** | ## 1. Hook Agency: the established contractor marketing agency [Hook Agency](https://hookagency.com/) is a Minneapolis marketing agency built around home service companies like roofers, HVAC and plumbers. It sells websites, local SEO, Google Maps SEO, paid ads and AEO (answer engine optimization, another name for GEO). It's a good fit for a growing contractor that wants a full marketing team on retainer and is comfortable with a yearly commitment. ## 2. Foxxr: GEO specialists for home service contractors [Foxxr](https://foxxr.com/services/ai-search-optimization/) is based in St. Petersburg, Florida, and offers GEO only to home service contractors, including HVAC, plumbing, roofing, electrical, restoration and custom builders. Its service includes AI visibility audits, schema and content work, and ongoing monitoring, sold month to month with no annual contract. Good if you want a GEO-focused team doing the work for you. ## 3. WebFX: the big all-in-one agency [WebFX](https://www.webfx.com/) is one of the largest US digital agencies, with about 750 staff and 30 years in business by its own count. It sells GEO and AI visibility tracking alongside everything else, using its own platforms such as OmniSEO. A fit for companies that want one large vendor across many channels. ## 4. LSEO: "best of" list placements [LSEO](https://lseo.com/), founded by Kris Jones, sells SEO, GEO and paid media, plus a service that places brands in "best of" lists and comparisons. Since AI tools lean heavily on those lists, that's a smart lever. A fit for brands with budget for third-party placements. ## 5. iPullRank: the enterprise expert [iPullRank](https://ipullrank.com/), led by Mike King, is one of the most respected names in AI search. It sells GEO, what it calls relevance engineering, and AI search strategy programs to enterprise and mid-market brands. Excellent, and usually more than a local contractor needs. ## The alternative: own your GEO instead of hiring an agency Every agency above sells GEO as a service you rent. That works, but when you stop paying, the work and the reporting stop too. **Own Your GEO** is built the other way around. I set up a GEO system for your company on your own accounts: a dashboard that tracks the questions homeowners ask AI across six engines, a weekly activity board that tells you what to fix next, and a content agent that writes pages aimed at the questions where AI skips you. We work through the fixes together for 30 days, then it's yours. - **Price:** $5,000 once (founding price for the first 5 clients, then $10,000), plus about $150 a month in AI costs paid straight to the providers. - **Contract:** no annual contract, just a simple sales agreement. - **Guarantee:** [90-day money-back guarantee](/guarantee/) for clients who follow the recommendations. - **Proof:** I built it for my own fence company, which became [#1 in AI visibility in its city](/case-study/fence-company/). ## Which should you choose? - **You want a full marketing team and have the budget:** Hook Agency or WebFX. - **You want a GEO specialist to do it all for you, month to month:** Foxxr. - **You're an enterprise brand:** iPullRank or LSEO. - **You're a contractor who wants AI to recommend you, without a retainer, and wants to own the system:** [Own Your GEO](/#offer). **About the $5,000 price:** $5,000 is the founding client price, available to the first 5 clients only. Once those 5 spots are filled, the Custom GEO Package goes to its regular price of $10,000. Agency details come from each company's own website, checked October 13, 2026. Pricing and services change, so confirm with them directly. Own Your GEO isn't affiliated with any agency listed. ## More on GEO agencies [Best GEO agencies for contractors: Five agencies compared, and the option to own it instead.](/blog/best-geo-agencies-for-contractors/) [Why rent your GEO when you can own it?: GEO agency vs owning your system, with the 3-year math.](/blog/rent-vs-own-geo/) [How to choose a GEO agency: 10 questions to ask, and when to skip the agency.](/blog/how-to-choose-a-geo-agency/) ## Questions What is the best GEO agency for contractors? For home service contractors, Hook Agency and Foxxr are the most trade-focused GEO agencies, and WebFX is the largest all-in-one option. If you would rather own your GEO system than pay a retainer, Own Your GEO builds one for $5,000 once (founding price for the first 5 clients, then $10,000). How much does a GEO agency cost? Most GEO agencies charge a monthly retainer. For example, Hook Agency lists local SEO from $2,800 a month with a yearly commitment, and GEO agencies commonly charge $3,000 to $6,000 a month. Own Your GEO is a one-time $5,000 build plus about $150 a month in AI costs. Is there an alternative to hiring a GEO agency? Yes. You can do GEO yourself with tracking software, or have a GEO system built that you own. Own Your GEO sets one up on your own accounts, works through 30 days of fixes with you, and hands it off with no retainer. ## See what AI says about your company I'll check what ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini, Perplexity, Meta AI and Grok say when homeowners in your area ask who to hire, and show you who they recommend instead of you. Ask these ten questions before you sign anything, whether you're talking to Hook Agency, Foxxr, WebFX, LSEO, iPullRank or anyone else. By [Joseph](/about/), founder of Own Your GEO · Updated October 13, 2026 ## 10 questions to ask a GEO agency 1. **Which AI engines do you track?** Look for ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity at minimum. Meta AI and Grok are a plus. 2. **Which questions will you track for me, and can I see the list?** They should match the jobs you want, in your service area. 3. **How often do you run them?** Weekly at least. One-off checks prove nothing because AI answers vary. 4. **Do you show a like-for-like comparison?** Adding questions over time inflates totals. Ask to see the same questions on the same engines over time. [Here's how I do it](/methodology/). 5. **Which websites does AI cite for my questions?** A good agency knows where AI looks in your market before it fixes anything. 6. **What exactly will you change each month?** Listings, reviews, content, schema. Get it in writing. 7. **Can I see results for a business like mine?** Ideally in your trade, with screenshots from tools you can check. 8. **Is there an annual contract?** Some require a year, some go month to month. 9. **What do I keep if I leave?** The data, the content, the logins, the dashboard? 10. **Is there a guarantee?** And what does it actually require of you? ## Red flags - Promises of "#1 in ChatGPT" by a date. Nobody controls AI answers. - Results from a single screenshot of one AI answer. - No access to your own data. - A long contract before they've shown you where you stand today. ## When to skip the agency Question 9 is the one that matters most. If the honest answer is "not much," you're renting your visibility. The alternative is to own the system. **Own Your GEO** builds it on your own accounts for $5,000 once (founding price for the first 5 clients, then $10,000), works through 30 days of fixes with you, and hands it off with a [90-day money-back guarantee](/guarantee/). Read [why rent your GEO when you can own it](/blog/rent-vs-own-geo/). ## How the agencies answer, from their own sites - [Foxxr](https://foxxr.com/services/ai-search-optimization/) works month to month with no annual contract. - [Hook Agency](https://hookagency.com/) lists a yearly commitment for its retainers. - [WebFX](https://www.webfx.com/), [LSEO](https://lseo.com/) and [iPullRank](https://ipullrank.com/) price by custom proposal. **About the $5,000 price:** $5,000 is the founding client price, available to the first 5 clients only. Once those 5 spots are filled, the Custom GEO Package goes to its regular price of $10,000. Agency details come from each company's own website, checked October 13, 2026. Ask which AI engines and questions they track, how often, whether they show a like-for-like comparison, which sites AI cites in your market, what they change each month, whether there is an annual contract, what you keep if you leave, and whether there is a guarantee. Can a GEO agency guarantee I will be recommended by ChatGPT? No one controls AI answers, so be wary of guaranteed rankings. A fair guarantee is tied to measured improvement on your tracked questions, like the Own Your GEO 90-day money-back guarantee. ## See what AI says about your company I'll check what ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini, Perplexity, Meta AI and Grok say when homeowners in your area ask who to hire, and show you who they recommend instead of you. It's free. [Book a free AI snapshot call](https://calendly.com/joseph-ownyourgeo/30min) --- GEO agency vs owning it # Why rent your GEO when you can own it? Hiring a GEO agency means renting your visibility in ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini and Perplexity. Here's what changes when you own the system instead, and the math over three years. By [Joseph](/about/), founder of Own Your GEO · Updated October 13, 2026 **The short version.** A GEO agency does the work for a monthly fee, and it stops when you stop paying. Owning your GEO means the tracking, the to-do list and the content engine run on your own accounts, and you keep them. Over three years, a typical agency retainer costs about $108,000 to $216,000. Owning the system with Own Your GEO costs about $10,400 at the $5,000 founding price, which is open to the first 5 clients only, or about $15,400 once the price goes to $10,000. ## What "renting" your GEO looks like Most GEO agencies, including well-known ones like [Hook Agency](https://hookagency.com/), [Foxxr](https://foxxr.com/services/ai-search-optimization/), [WebFX](https://www.webfx.com/), [LSEO](https://lseo.com/) and [iPullRank](https://ipullrank.com/), sell GEO as an ongoing service. They track how AI talks about you, fix what they find, and send you reports. That's real work and good agencies do it well. But the dashboards, the data and the know-how live with them. When the retainer ends, so does your view of what AI says about you. ## What "owning" your GEO looks like - **Your own dashboard** showing how often AI names you, how you rank against competitors, and which websites AI trusts in your area. - **A weekly activity board** that tells you exactly what to fix next. - **A content agent** that writes new pages aimed at the questions where AI skips you. - **All on your accounts.** You keep the system, the data and the logins. ## The 3-year math | | GEO agency | Own Your GEO | | --- | --- | --- | | Upfront | $0 | $5,000 (founding price for the first 5 clients, then $10,000) | | Monthly | Often $3,000 to $6,000 | About $150 in AI costs, paid to the providers | | 3-year total | About $108,000 to $216,000 | About $10,400 at the founding price, or about $15,400 at the regular $10,000 price | | When you stop paying | The work and reporting stop | You still own everything | | Who does the fixes | The agency | We do them together for 30 days, then you | ## When an agency is still the right call Be honest with yourself here. If you never want to look at a dashboard, have no one on your team to act on a to-do list, and the budget is comfortable, an agency is a fine choice. See [the best GEO agencies for contractors](/blog/best-geo-agencies-for-contractors/) to pick one. ## When owning it is the better call If you or someone in your office can spend an hour or two a week on the fixes the system recommends, owning it costs a fraction of a retainer and keeps working after the hand-off. That's what I did for my own fence company, and it became [#1 in AI visibility in its city](/case-study/fence-company/). **About the $5,000 price:** $5,000 is the founding client price, available to the first 5 clients only. Once those 5 spots are filled, the Custom GEO Package goes to its regular price of $10,000. Agency details come from each company's own website, checked October 13, 2026. If you have no time to act on recommendations and the budget for a retainer, an agency makes sense. If you can spend an hour or two a week on fixes, owning a GEO system costs far less over time and keeps working after you stop paying anyone. What does it mean to own your GEO? It means the tracking dashboard, the to-do list of fixes and the content engine run on your own accounts, so you keep them. Own Your GEO builds this for contractors for $5,000 once (founding price for the first 5 clients, then $10,000) plus about $150 a month in AI costs. ## See what AI says about your company I'll check what ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini, Perplexity, Meta AI and Grok say when homeowners in your area ask who to hire, and show you who they recommend instead of you. By [Joseph](/about/), founder of Own Your GEO · Updated October 13, 2026 **The short version.** Homeowners now ask AI which fence company to hire. AI answers from what it finds about you on Google, review sites, directories, local lists and your website. Track the questions below every week, find out which sites AI cites for them, and get your company onto those sites with detailed, consistent information. ## What homeowners ask AI about fencing These are the kinds of questions to track. Add your city or service area to each one, and add one for every service you sell. - "Who's the best fence company near me?" - "Who installs cedar privacy fences near me?" - "How much does a 6 ft privacy fence cost?" - "Which fence company does pool fences?" - "Who builds custom gates near me?" The first type, "who should I hire", is the one that brings calls. Cost and problem questions matter too, because AI often names local companies in those answers. ## Where AI looks for fencing recommendations In my own tracking for fence questions, AI cited Google most, then the fence company's own website, then Thumbtack, HomeAdvisor, Angi and the BBB. Local "best fence companies" lists also show up often. The American Fence Association member directory is worth a listing too. The exact mix changes by city, so check which sites AI cites for your own questions before you spend time on any of them. That's the first thing a GEO dashboard shows you. ## What to fix first 1. **Your Google Business Profile.** Exact name, right category, every service, real service area, job photos. 2. **Reviews with detail.** Ask customers to mention the job and the neighborhood. 3. **The directories AI cites for your questions.** Complete, identical listings. 4. **Answer pages on your website.** One page per main service and area, written as answers. ## Tips specific to fencing - Write a page per fence type (wood, vinyl, iron, chain link) and per major area you serve. That is what moved my own website from the 26th to the 2nd most-cited site. - Ask for reviews that name the fence type and the neighborhood. - Track the "who should I hire" questions separately from cost questions. They behave differently, and the hiring ones bring the calls. ## Does this work for a small fence company? Yes. AI doesn't favor the biggest ad budget. It favors the company it can find and trust for a specific question in a specific area. I used this approach on my own fence company, and it's now #1 in AI visibility in its city and the second most-cited website for fence questions, behind only Google. Add your city or service area to each one, and add one for every service you sell. - "Who's the best plumber near me for an emergency?" - "Who installs tankless water heaters near me?" - "Which plumber can fix a slab leak?" - "How much does it cost to replace a water heater?" - "Is there a 24-hour plumber near me?" The first type, "who should I hire", is the one that brings calls. Cost and problem questions matter too, because AI often names local companies in those answers. ## Where AI looks for plumbing recommendations Google Business Profile and reviews, Yelp, Angi, HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack, Nextdoor recommendations, and the BBB. Water heater and fixture brands also run installer directories worth checking. ## Tips specific to plumbing - Emergency and 24-hour questions are where plumbing calls come from. State your hours and response area clearly and identically everywhere. - Write pages for the specific jobs you want more of, such as water heaters, repiping or sewer lines, with real price ranges. - Ask for reviews that mention the problem you fixed and how fast you got there. ## Does this work for a small plumber? Yes. AI doesn't favor the biggest ad budget. It favors the company it can find and trust for a specific question in a specific area. I used this approach on my own fence company, and it's now #1 in AI visibility in its city and the second most-cited website for fence questions, behind only Google. Make sure AI can find consistent, detailed information about your company on the sites it trusts for plumbing questions in your area: your Google Business Profile and reviews, the main directories, local "best of" lists, and your own website. Track the questions homeowners ask every week to see what moves. How much does GEO cost for a plumber? Agencies often charge $3,000 to $6,000 a month and tracking tools about $95 to $580 a month. Own Your GEO builds a system you own for $5,000 once (founding price for the first 5 clients, then $10,000), plus about $150 a month in AI costs paid directly to the providers. How long until AI starts recommending me? Website and directory fixes can show up within a week or two. Overall visibility builds over a few months as reviews and listings add up. ## See what AI says about your company I'll check what ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini, Perplexity, Meta AI and Grok say when homeowners in your area ask who to hire, and show you who they recommend instead of you. By [Joseph](/about/), founder of Own Your GEO · Updated October 13, 2026 ### GEO (generative engine optimization) The work of getting your business named in answers written by AI tools like ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini, Perplexity, Meta AI and Grok. ### AEO (answer engine optimization) Another name for GEO. Some people also say AI SEO or LLM SEO. ### AI Overviews The AI-written summary Google shows at the top of some search results. ### AI Mode Google's chat-style search, where the whole result is an AI answer. ### LLM (large language model) The type of AI behind ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and similar tools. ### Query fan-out When an AI tool turns one question into several web searches before it answers. It's why directories, reviews and your website all matter. ### Citation A website an AI answer links to or draws from. Being cited, and being named on cited sites, both help. ### Mention rate The share of AI answers that name your company for the questions you track. ### Share of voice Your mentions as a share of all company mentions in the answers you track. ### Tracked question (prompt) A fixed question asked to AI engines on a schedule so results can be compared over time. ### Like-for-like comparison Comparing only the same questions on the same engines between two dates, so new questions don't inflate the result. ### Schema markup Code on a web page that labels facts like your business name, services and FAQs so machines can read them. ### llms.txt A plain-text file at the root of a website that summarizes it for AI tools. ### AI crawler The bot an AI company uses to read websites, such as OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, PerplexityBot or ClaudeBot. ### Google Business Profile Your free business listing on Google Search and Maps, one of the sources AI cites most for local contractors. Updated October 13, 2026 ## How it works 1. **Day one is your baseline.** When your system goes live, it records how often AI names you across your tracked questions. 2. **You follow the recommendations.** Your activity board tells you what to fix each week. Work through it for 90 days. 3. **We compare on day 90.** We use the like-for-like view, the same questions on the same engines, so the test is fair. 4. **If you're not named in more answers, you get your money back.** ## The deposit The $500 deposit holds your build spot and counts toward your $5,000 total. If you cancel before your system is built, you get the full deposit back. After it's built, the deposit is only refundable through this guarantee, which covers everything you've paid once your system is live. ## Why there's a condition The system shows you what to fix, but the fixes happen on your Google profile, your reviews, your listings and your website. The guarantee is for clients who act on the recommendations. The full terms are in your sales agreement. ## Questions What does the guarantee cover? The Custom GEO Package. If you follow the system's recommendations for 90 days after it goes live and you're not named in more of your tracked AI answers than on day one, you get a refund of what you paid. ## See what AI says about your company I'll check what ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini, Perplexity, Meta AI and Grok say when homeowners in your area ask who to hire, and show you who they recommend instead of you. [Book a free AI snapshot call](https://calendly.com/joseph-ownyourgeo/30min) --- Methodology # How I measure AI visibility AI answers change from person to person and day to day, so a single search proves nothing. This is exactly how the numbers on this site, and on every client dashboard, are produced. By [Joseph](/about/), founder of Own Your GEO · Updated October 13, 2026 ## The questions Each dashboard tracks a fixed set of questions homeowners actually ask, written for the client's trade, services and service area. They fall into hiring ("who should I hire for..."), cost, trust and problem questions. A typical setup tracks up to 85 questions, chosen with the client so they match the jobs they want. ## The AI engines Each question is asked on six engines: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Meta AI and Grok. About 500 searches run every week on a $150 a month budget, and the count can scale up. ## The numbers | Metric | What it means | | --- | --- | | Mention rate | The share of AI answers that name your company. | | Rank | Where you place against tracked competitors by mention rate. | | Named first | The share of answers that list you before any other company. | | Average position | Where you appear in the list when you're named. | | Citations | Which websites AI links to or draws from, and how often. | | Leads from AI | Calls and forms where the customer says they found you through an AI tool. | ## The fair test When more questions or engines are added over time, the total numbers can rise just because there's more to measure. So every dashboard also shows a like-for-like view: only the questions and engines that were in both scans. That's the number that shows whether the work is actually moving AI. I report both, even when the like-for-like view is flat. ## Outside checks For my own results I also check against two independent tools, Promptwatch and Profound. The screenshots in the [case study](/case-study/fence-company/) come from them. Company names are hidden for privacy. ## Limits - AI answers vary by user, location and time, so all numbers are samples and come with a range. - AI tools change often. A jump or drop in one week can be the engine changing, not you. - Leads from AI depend on customers telling you how they found you, so they undercount. ## See what AI says about your company I'll check what ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini, Perplexity, Meta AI and Grok say when homeowners in your area ask who to hire, and show you who they recommend instead of you.
